They aren't--they--the Institute is one of the pillars of humankind, dedicated to solving the perils plaguing the world. Pretty sure you can't have the job without caring about it or what happens to its people.

You absolutely can. Have you not seen memories of Five's father. Brilliant, striving to save the star, but he couldn't even muster a hug for his actual children.

I do not doubt this man's conviction. What I doubt is his ability to see those around him as more than tools.
